今日语言点
在今天的节目中, Simon 和董征会教授以下几个方面:
Getting formality right
- The formality of emails partly depends on whether they are work-related or not.
- Work emails can also be informal, but they should be more formal when they are external, for example to clients.
- When replying to an email, it is a good idea to ‘mirror’ the style of the one you received.
- In more formal emails, it is best to avoid slang, abbreviations and nicknames.
Ordering your ideas
- Come to the point of your email quickly.
- In English, people tend to give an answer to a question before they give their reasons.
- The subject line should always be relevant.
Letter-writing etiquette
- Always use a spellchecker. Observe UK or US spelling differences.
- Use ‘Yours faithfully’ if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to, or ‘Yours sincerely’ if you do.
