Think about the last time you disagreed with someone in Chinese. It might have been a friend at university, or a colleague at work, or a family member. Do you remember what you said?

See if you can repeat your conversation, but this time in English. What language should you use to express your opinion? Remember to be polite!

How to raise a concern

A polite way to do this is to ask questions. This shows that you are unsure about what people have suggested and is a polite way of asking people to justify their opinion.

How to disagree politely

A man talking on his mobile phone

Matt Geezer is a very disagreeable man

It's usually not necessary to say, "I disagree with you". It's more polite to simply state your own view. However, using signal words will highlight the fact that you have your own take on matters. Simon and Jean discuss these signal words further in the programme.

How to make your point with force

There are words which add emphasis to what we say to make sure people pay attention. There are also phrases which you can use to soften the impact of something that might be difficult to hear. Listen to the programme to find out more.
