William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got married in April

All young people have fun when they go travelling, even if they are royalty.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - William and Catherine – are about to embark on their first official overseas tour.

They will be travelling around Canada from 30 June to 8 July, before heading off to Los Angeles.

According to their private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the couple's itinerary consists of "meaningful engagements, mixed with fun and lots of opportunities to get to know Canada and Canadians better."

The day after the couple touch down is Canada Day, when they will join hundreds of thousands of people in Ottawa.

The couple will get to taste local delicacies, such as lobster, and chocolate-covered potato crisps, while on Prince Edward Island on 3 and 4 July.

From 6-8 July, William and Catherine will take in another famous sight: the Calgary Stampede, which involves a rodeo and festival. When they arrive, the couple will be presented with some souvenirs – a pair of cowboy hats.

The royal couple are not exactly backpacking but they are taking a smaller than usual retinue. The Duchess of Cambridge is not taking a lady-in-waiting, although she will have a hairdresser with her.

As a Commonwealth realm, Canada is independent of the UK but the Queen remains the head of state.
